Overview

Mucem, the Museum of Civilisations of Europe and the Mediterranean, is No. 55 in The Art Newspaper's survey of the world's most visited art museums, with 1,375,533 visitors in 2025, up 6% on 2024. It opened in 2013, when Marseille was European Capital of Culture, at the entrance to the Vieux-Port.

The museum has two main sites: the J4, a square building by Rudy Ricciotti wrapped in a lace-like concrete lattice, and the 17th-century Fort Saint-Jean, which are joined by a slender footbridge high above the water.

Best time to visit

Visit late in the day for the light on the sea, or in the morning for fewer visitors. The museum is closed on Tuesdays; check the official website for hours.
