Overview
The National Gallery is No. 10 in The Art Newspaper's survey of the world's most visited art museums, with 4,147,544 visitors in 2025, up 29% on 2024. Founded in 1824, it moved in 1838 into William Wilkins's building on the north side of Trafalgar Square.
Its collection of more than 2,300 paintings covers Western European art from the 13th century to the early 20th century. For the gallery's 200th anniversary, the Sainsbury Wing, opened in 1991, was refurbished and reopened in May 2025 with a new entrance. Admission is free.
