Overview

The National Museum of African American History and Culture is No. 52 in The Art Newspaper's survey of the world's most visited art museums, with 1,400,000 visitors in 2025, down 13% on 2024. Part of the Smithsonian Institution, it opened in 2016 on the National Mall in Washington, DC.

Its building, designed by David Adjaye with the Freelon Group and Davis Brody Bond, is wrapped in a bronze-coloured metal lattice, the 'corona'. Inside, history galleries below ground and culture and community galleries above tell the story of African American life, history and culture.
