No. 4 25 Great National Parks 2026

Yellowstone National Park

Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, United States

Geysers, hot springs and free-roaming bison in the world's first national park.

Overview

Established in 1872, Yellowstone is widely regarded as the world's first national park. It sits mostly in Wyoming and holds about half of the world's active geysers.

A figure-eight Grand Loop Road links the main areas. Wildlife includes bison, elk, wolves and bears; keep a safe distance from all animals.

Best time to visit

Late May to September, when most roads are open. Most roads close to cars in winter, when the park is reached by snowcoach or snowmobile.
