Overview

Ha Long Bay, in the Gulf of Tonkin, has around 1,600 limestone islands and islets, many with caves and steep forested sides. Together with the Cat Ba archipelago it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Most visitors see it on a day cruise or an overnight boat trip, with stops for caves, kayaking and swimming. Lan Ha Bay, next to Cat Ba, is a quieter alternative.

Best time to visit

Roughly March to May and September to November bring the most pleasant weather. Summer is hot with storms possible; cruises can be cancelled in bad weather. Winter is cool and often misty.
