Overview
The Blue Mountains are a deeply eroded sandstone plateau west of Sydney, cut by gorges and valleys of eucalyptus forest. The blue haze that gives them their name comes from the forests.
The area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Towns such as Katoomba and Leura are bases for lookouts, walking tracks and waterfalls.

Best time to visit
Spring and autumn are good for walking; summers can be hot with fire risk, and winters cool. Check track closures and fire warnings before going.
