Overview
Toledo was the capital of Visigothic Spain and later a centre of Christian, Muslim and Jewish culture in the Middle Ages. The historic city, almost encircled by the River Tagus, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Its lanes hold the Gothic cathedral, the Alcázar fortress, medieval synagogues and a small mosque, and many works by El Greco, who lived here.

Best time to visit
Spring and autumn are best; summer afternoons can be very hot. Weekdays are quieter.
