Overview
The Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza is No. 76 in The Art Newspaper's survey of the world's most visited art museums, with 1,003,455 visitors in 2025, up 5% on 2024. It opened in 1992 in the Villahermosa Palace, opposite the Prado, and with the Prado and the Reina Sofía forms Madrid's 'Golden Triangle of Art'.
Its collection, assembled by the Thyssen-Bornemisza family and acquired by Spain in 1993, fills gaps in the other two museums: early Italian and Netherlandish painting, Impressionism, German Expressionism and American art. The Carmen Thyssen collection is shown alongside it.
