Overview
The Zaanse Schans is a neighbourhood of historic wooden houses, warehouses and windmills moved here from around the Zaan region, once one of the world's first industrial areas, powered by hundreds of windmills.
Some mills still saw wood or grind spices and pigments, and small museums and workshops show traditional crafts such as clog-making and cheese-making.

Best time to visit
Spring and summer are best; the mills turn only when there is wind. Mornings are quieter than midday.
