Overview
The Van Gogh Museum is No. 24 in Tripadvisor's Travelers' Choice Best of the Best 2026 ranking of the top attractions in the world, and No. 39 in The Art Newspaper's survey of the world's most visited art museums, with 1,867,342 visitors in 2025, up 1% on 2024. It holds the world's largest collection of work by Vincent van Gogh: more than 200 paintings, about 500 drawings and over 750 letters.
The collection came from the artist's brother Theo and his family. The museum opened in 1973 in a building designed by Gerrit Rietveld. An exhibition wing by Kisho Kurokawa followed in 1999 and a glass entrance hall on Museumplein in 2015. Works by Van Gogh's contemporaries, such as Gauguin and Toulouse-Lautrec, show the world in which his art developed.
