Overview
The pyramids of Giza were built as royal tombs about 4,500 years ago. The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the largest, beside the pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure and the Great Sphinx. They are part of the Memphis and its Necropolis UNESCO World Heritage Site, which also includes Saqqara and Dahshur.
The Grand Egyptian Museum, close to the plateau, displays many of the country's greatest treasures, including the Tutankhamun collection.
